Definition

Sciatica is defined as an inflammation of the supporting tissues of the nerves of the leg. This condition is characterized by a pain running from the lumbar region to the rear of the legs. Sciatica pains – felt in either one or both of the legs – are usually experienced after the age of 30, and continue aggravating because the age advances.

Causes

Compression of the nervus spinalis due to ruptured vertebral disc within the spine. Contraction of the piriformis muscle, which can result in strangulation of the nearby sciatic nerve, leading to pain. A faulty posture like slumping on a chair, sleeping in a curved position. An injury that hurts the lower back region will be a triggering cause for sciatic pains.

Symptoms

The symptom of Sciatica is that pain travels from the lower back region to the back of the legs. Ayurvedic View called Gridhrasi in Ayurveda, Sciatica is considered to be caused thanks to impaired digestion. A faulty digestive system causes the buildup of poisons (ama) that accumulate within the minute channels of the body.

Toning and demulcent herbs also are prescribed to nourish the systema nervosum and alleviate imbalanced body energies. Medicated oils can also be applied to soothe the nervus ischiadicus. Panchakarma massage therapies will be effective in subsiding the pains of Sciatica. Advice a proportion of the diet must be carbohydrates, which facilitate proper movement of bowels, thereby bettering the body's digestion. Green leafy vegetables should be incorporated within the diet as they provide fiber which improves digestion and elimination of wastes. Fruits like bananas and apples are recommended. Heavy meals must be avoided as they take an extended time to digest. This might exert undue pressure on the lower back region. Do some light sciatica exercises like light walking and jogging. Don’t exercise if your condition is extremely painful. Taking hot and cold compresses on an alternate basis is often quite helpful in relieving pain.
